camp wandawega

I recently stumbled upon Camp Wandawega from following Paul Octavious, a phenomanal Chicago-based photographer, on Instagram (seriously, follow him!). He recently took these amazing photos while at a retreat at Camp Wandawega. Since it’s in Wisconsin, I knew I had to learn more. It turns out the camp has an amazing story. And it is less than an hour from our house…maybe I’ve been living under a rock?

Camp Wandawega is owned by Tereasa Surratt & David Hernandez. David grew up going to the camp and Tereasa is a woman of many hats, including being a creative director and an author (one of her books, Found Free & Flea, is on my wish list!). While the camp has changed hands and purposes a handful of times since the 1920′s (it’s been everything from a brothel, speakeasy, supper club, to summer camp), today it’s been restored to its original state as an incredible lake resort with impeccable taste and a nod to classic Americana. Tereasa and David live and work in Chicago but spend their weekends at Camp Wandawega. With an incredible team and a year’s worth of weekends at work, they even built this amazing treehouse…

Now let’s take a look at the decor throughout the rest of the camp. It seems every detail has been covered and it’s an amazing curation of vintage Americana. I love that all of the decor seems to make it feel like you’re living there. You can rent cabins, tents, and even tepees! Wouldn’t it be a fun and different getaway?

california // part five

And now for the final installment of photos from our trip to California. We spent our last day visiting where Nick grew up and hiking Mount Baldy…it was absolutely breathtaking! With the sunshine, blue skies, and mountain wind, the weather was perfect. We both agreed it would be amazing to live near mountains and go on this kind of hike every weekend! (California, you really do have it all.) The mountains give such a feeling of fresh perspective, and who doesn’t need more of that in life?

california // part four

And then we drove the coast, which was a major highlight. From Long Beach to San Diego was only a couple hours and I’m pretty sure Southern California is the most beautiful place for a road trip. First I’ll share Laguna Beach. Although I had driven through once before, I never got to explore. The houses were built on mountains overlooking the ocean. We drove to the top of a neighborhood and enjoyed the most stunning views! We also had lunch at The Stand, which I happened to read about in a guide book at our place. It was a vegatarian’s (or vegan’s) dream!! I could eat their hummus guacamole pita (not to mention yummy fresh smoothies!) every day.

california // part two

Ever since our trip, I’ve been making a habit of pausing to appreciate the sunset each day, no matter what I’m doing. It’s such a simple way to enjoy every day. There is something especially magnificent about the sunsets in California and each one we saw was stunning, saturated with color. Almost every night we planned around catching the sunset from a good view. :) Here are photos of a sunset from Signal Hill in Long Beach…it was incredible!!

The sky really did look that way, all ablaze! What a beautiful sight.

Happy Tuesday! I’m thinking of all of you on the East Coast and hoping you are safe!

xoxo

california // part one

Happy Monday! Hope you all had a great weekend. Thanks for your wonderful comments on my post on Friday. They were so encouraging to me! I’m glad to hear so many of you can relate.

This week I’m excited to share photos from our trip to California!

First, I’ll share where we stayed. We wanted to rent an apartment instead of stay in a hotel and it was my first time using Airbnb. We couldn’t have been happier with our experience and would highly recommend it! We stayed in Long Beach and it was the perfect location to be able to explore Southern California!
